Describe the main structures of flowering plants (eg leaves) and what function the have?

Roots - anchor plants to soil/ground and absorb nutrients for photosynthesis

Stems and Branches - holds leaves in best position to get as much light as possible for photosynthesis

Leaves - site of photosynthesis, production of glucose.

Flowers - sexual reproduction

Colourful - attract animal/insect pollinators

200

What is the equation for photosynthesis?

200

What dispersal method does this plant use? Explain how it works?

Animal Dispersal

Animals eat the blueberries whole, the digestive system of the animal helps to break down the pericarp (fruit) and make the seed viable for germination. The animal moves away from the parent plant, excretes the seed in its faeces. The faeces also helps to fertilise the soil.

What are structures A, B and C? What are their functions?

A = Stigma (catches pollen)

B = Anther (produces pollen)

C = Ovule (female gamete - becomes the seed)

300

How old is this tree?

12 years old

300

What are the structures labeled below and what are their functions?

A = Plumule (becomes the shoots)

B = Radicle (becomes the roots)

C = Micropyle (allows entrance of water and oxygen)

D = Testa (hard outer shell to protect plant embryo)

E = Cotyledon (starch stores for energy)

Name the original Avengers who fought in the 'Battle of New York' in the 2012 Movie Avengers...

Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk (Bruce Banner), Black Widow (Natasha Romanoff) and Hawkeye (Clint Barton)

400

What are structures A, B and C? What are their functions?

A = Upper Epidermis (protects plants from physical damage and prevents excess water loss)

B = Palisade Mesophyll (main site of photosynthesis - has highest proportion of chloroplasts)

C = Guard Cell (controls the opening and closing of the stomatal pores)

400

What are zones A, B, C and D? And what is different about the cells in each zone?

A = Root cap (protects root as it burrows deeper into the soil)

B = Zone of Cell Division or Apical Meristem (meristematic cells divide my mitosis to create new cells)

C = Zone of Elongation (undifferentiated cells increase in length due to the uptake of water into cells)

D = Zone of Differentiation (cells differentiate to gain specific shape, cellular organelles and function)

400

What THREE conditions are needed for Germination to occur?

1) Moisture (water)

2) Warmth (suitable temperature)

3) Oxygen (for aerobic respiration)

500

What is the name of the male and female reproductive organs on a flower and what structures are they made of?

Male = Stamen (Anther + Filament)

Female = Carpel (Stigma + Style + Ovary)

500

What are A, B, C and D? What are their functions?

A = Cortex / Bark (protects the inside layers from physical damage and water loss)

B = Phloem (nutrient transport)

C = Cambium (site of cellular division - meristematic cells divide by mitosis)

D = Xylem (water transport)

500

In regards to germination, what does the term dormant refer to? What enables a seed to remain viable after a number of weeks being dormant?

Dormant refers to a seed that is unable to germinate due to unsuitable conditions.

The hard testa of the seed protects the plant embryo whilst dormant. The cotyledons provide sufficient energy stores to keep the plant embryo alive

Name three difference between wind pollinated flowers and animal pollinated flowers...

1) Animal = bright coloured petals

    Wind = no petals

2) Animal = Anther and Stigma are largely inside the flower

    Wind = Anther and Stigma dangle outside of the flower

3) Animal = produces nectar and has a strong scent

    Wind = no nectar, no scent

600

Explain what dry and live mass refer to? Why does dry mass decrease initially and then increase again after day 10?

Live Mass = mass of living tissue, including; water, seed, seedling.

Dry Mass = mass of seed and seedling only

The dry mass initially decreases because as the energy reserves in the cotyledons are being used up by respiration. The dry mass increases after day 10 due to photosynthesis producing glucose and making starch.

After day 10, once the plumule reaches the surface of the soil, the seedling is exposed to light and photosynthesis start. The dry mass starts to increase as the plant is no longer dependent upon food stored in the seed for energy.
