What is an enzyme?
A protein that speeds up a chemical reaction (biological catalyst)
What was the independent variable in our investigation?
Temperature (°C).
What calculation did we use to find the average of our repeated trials?
The mean.
What is the name of this NRL superstar?
Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow "The Hammer"
Who is Mrs Ferguson's husband?
Mr Ferguson! Year 7 HOY :)
What enzyme did we investigate using capsicum?
Catalase
What was the dependent variable in our investigation?
Foam height (mm) / catalase activity.
What is a trend in experimental results?
The overall pattern or change shown by the data.
Which Torres Strait Islander basketball star has played in the NBA and for Australia?
Patty Mills
Where does Mrs Ferguson call home?
Redcliffe (North Brisbane)
What did the foam height tell us about catalase activity?
More foam = higher catalase activity.
What is a controlled variable?
Something that is kept the same during an investigation.
What is an anomaly?
A result that is very different from the other results.
Which famous Torres Strait Islander singer is known for “My Island Home”?
Christine Anu
What is Mrs Ferguson's favourite NRL team?
Dolphins
What happens to enzyme activity when the temperature is too cold, and why?
Enzyme activity slows down because particles have less kinetic (moving) energy and there are fewer successful collisions.
Give TWO controlled variables from our temperature investigation.
E.g. amount of capsicum, amount/concentration of hydrogen peroxide, reaction time., measuring equipment
What two things should you include when using a result as evidence?
A number/value and its unit.
Which Torres Strait Islander plays five-eighth for the Brisbane Broncos?
Ezra Mam
What is Mrs Ferguson's favourite sport?
Netball
Explain why enzyme activity can decrease when the temperature becomes too high.
The enzyme can denature. Its active site changes shape, so the substrate cannot bind as effectively and enzyme activity decreases.
A student only completed one trial at each temperature. What is the problem with their results?
The results are less reliable because there are no repeated trials to check if the results are consistent or identify unusual results.
If your results do not match what science says should happen, should you change your results? Explain.
No. Report the results you collected and explain that they did not match the expected relationship.
Which famous Torres Strait Islander from Mer fought for Indigenous land rights?
Eddie Koiki Mabo
What was Mrs Ferguson's job before becoming a teacher?
Scientist in a laboratory (testing blood)
