What does SFBC stand for
Solution Focused Brief Counseling
Detailing
Helps young clients and other stakeholders to clarify behaviors and thoughts that have either been helpful in the pas or will be helpful in the future
Goaling criteria
Detailed, in the presence of an action, are in the clients control
If you are just starting to become more solution focused, what technique should you use with a client first
Scaling
How would you handle the situation:
A teacher or parent had been trying to help a child change for the better and could not accomplish this, and you, the counselor, could.
Acknowledge and praise the work the teacher or parent did, minimize your potential impact and emphasize teamwork, ask them to be on the lookout, conduct a solution focused interview with each person involved
Hypothetical vs exceptions
Hypothetical- behaviors and thoughts that will be helpful in the future
Exceptions- behaviors and thoughts that were helpful in the past
Amplifying
Helps clients identify small goals and intensify them into larger goals, thus creating a behavioral ripple effect
Give an example of a Miracle Question
"Suppose that when you are sleeping tonight a miracle happens. The miracle is that the problem that you brought here is solved. When you wake up what will be different that will tell you that a miracle has happened?"
What does EARS stand for
Elicit, amplify, reinforce, start again
What are the benefits of solution-focused parent conferences
Discuss what is working with the student, maximize a students achievement potential
Scaling
The process of scaling involves rating how they are currently doing on a scale from 1 to 10
Mine Fielding
Helps young clients clarify how they have achieved or have been more on track even though it was difficult. Mines are metaphors for threats to their progress which have the potential to "blow them off course." It is important the counselor help clients recognize how they avoided these mines.
What are the components of a message that is given to a client at the end of a first session
Two or three compliments about their motivation, summary of the clients wishes, an assignment for doing more of the tasks or goals identified in the meeting
Give an example of refocusing your client from external to internal, why is this important?
