Will I be giving you feedback on your Investigating the Conversation first drafts?

No, you are supposed to come up with your own revision plan.

List two formatting requirements that I'll be looking for in the formatting section of the rubric

- Double Spaced

- 12 point Times New Roman font

- Name block in the top left corner of the first page

- Last name and page number in the right corner of the header

- Unique title centered above the first paragraph

-Works Cited has hanging indent on citations

100

Do you need to use an in-text citation after paraphrased material?

Yes, otherwise you are plagiarizing.

100

What is the correct pronunciation of your instructor's name?

"L" like the letter

200

Are you supposed to use colored font for the Investigating the Conversation essay? If so, how?

Yes! You are supposed to color code your sources to create a "synthesis rainbow."

200

What does this formula represent:
Author A writes, ‘X’; author B agrees (disagrees, elaborates upon, etc.) and writes, ‘Y.’”

Synthesis!

200

Is evidence of revision a part of your grade on the final draft?

Yes

200

Where should you put the period in the following quotation

"People evolve a language in order to describe and thus control their circumstances" (Baldwin)

After the in-text citation:

"People evolve a language in order to describe and thus control their circumstances" (Baldwin).

What is your instructor's first name?

Rebecca

A part of synthesis is using your sources to come to broader conclusions. In this class are you required to draw relationships between your sources AND come to broader conclusions?

You only need to draw relationships between your sources. You'll start working on coming to broader conclusions in English 2010.

List two things the "Structure and Organization" section of the rubric is grading you on.

-Essay follows a logical organizational scheme

-includes a clear contextual introduction; a clearly stated main idea/thesis, a well defined conclusion

-well developed paragraphs supporting the main idea. This includes topic sentences.

-clear transitions between paragraphs and ideas

(Young 110).

In class your instructor explained she was tired of reading about a certain current event for the ITC essay. What current event was it?

400

30

In class we read this paragraph to demonstrate a "synthesis sin." What is wrong with this synthesis paragraph?

One reason chocolate should be on every elementary school lunch menu is that it makes students feel so good. Rita Dove, president of the Dove Chocolate Corporation, agrees, stating, “Chocolate is the perfect end to a satisfying luncheon” (qtd. in Craigo 18).

The synthesis word "agrees" is inaccurate. Be sure your synthesis words accurately represent the relationship between your sources!

400

List two things that I will be looking for when grading you on "Source Use/Information Literacy"

-Sources included are appropriate to audience and purpose

-sources would be considered relevant and credible by a broadly defined academic audience;

-sources are consistently and accurately summarized, paraphrased, quoted, and cited. Quotation sandwiches are a part of this.

-In-text citations are formatted according to MLA format.

400

What is the format used to identify longer works published under their own title and not contained in other works (books, magazines, movies, etc.)?

Italics

400

What video games does your instructor play?

Some of my favorite video games: Breath of the Wild, Limbo, Legend of Mana, and I play Mario Party a fair bit.

500

In class we read this paragraph to demonstrate a "synthesis sin." What is wrong with this synthesis paragraph?

In Karen Craigo’s article “Milton Hershey Should be Canonized,” Lisa Simpson states, “I love chocolate” (14). Wayland Smithers agrees with this sentiment, stating, “Chocolate is the greatest discovery humankind can claim” (qtd. in Craigo 17).

Synthesis happens between two or more sources, and both of these quotes come from the same source.

A relationship between ideas is being represented, but not from two or more different sources.

500

In class we read this paragraph to demonstrate a "synthesis sin." What is wrong with this synthesis paragraph?

Harry Dresden argues in his article “Chocolate for the Ages” that “taxpayers should receive a write-off for every chocolate purchase they make.” Karen Murphy disagrees in her article “Vanilla for the Win” saying that “Vanilla should be a write-off.” Likewise, Molly Carpenter states “Vanilla is far superior to chocolate and if anything should be a write-off, it should be vanilla.”

The author is drawing relationships between sources, but their own voice is lost.

Ask yourself: Are you interpreting quotes and furthering your own ideas, or are you just piling quotes one on top of the other?

500

The rubric has a section "Rhetorical Awareness." What is this section grading you on?

- professional tone

- staying focused on the task of investigating a conversation

- not being argumentative

500
