What is group?
People working together to attain a specific objective with which each is concerned
What is interest group?
The fourth stage. The structure at this point is fully functional and accepted.
What is performing stage?
A set of phases that temporary groups go through that involves transitions between inertia and activity. Used by temporary groups.
What is Punctuated Equilibrium Model?
A set of expected behavior patterns attributed to someone occupying a given position in a social unit

A designed work group defined by an organization's structure
What is formal group?
People brought together because they share one or more common characteristics
What is friendship group?
Members accept the existence of the group but resist the constraints it imposes on individuality. There is conflict over who will lead the group.

This meeting sets the group’s direction

An individual's view of how he or she is supposed to act in a given situation
What is role perception?
A group that is neither formally structured nor organizationally determined; such a group appears in response to the need for social contact
What is informal group?
Perspective or theory that considers when and why individuals consider themselves members of groups
What is social identity theory?
This stage is characterized by concern with wrapping up activities rather than task performance
What is adjourning stage?
The group tends to stand still or become locked into a fixed course of action even if it gains new insights that challenge initial patterns and assumptions. The group is inactive.
What is group inertia?
How others believe a person should act in a given situation or role.
What is role expectation?
A group composed of the individuals who report directly to a given manager
What is command group?
Perspective in which we see members of our ingroup as better than other people, and people not in our group as all the same
What is ingroup favouritism?
Characterized by a great deal of uncertainty about the group’s purpose, structure, and leadership. Members “test the waters” to determine what types of behaviors are acceptable.
What is forming stage?
This period ends phase 1 and sets a revised direction for phase 2.
What is transition?
An unwritten agreement that sets out what management expects from an employee and vice versa

People working together to complete a job task
