What is sociobiology?
Taking or pretending to take roles of others
What is role-taking?
An interactive process through which people learn the basic skills, values, beliefs, and behavior patterns of a society
What is socialization?
Individual groups and institutions that enable socialization to take place.
What are agents of socialization?
An unchanging, biologically inherited behavior pattern
What is instinct?
Specific people, such as parents, siblings, relatives, or friends who have a direct influence on our socialization
What are significant others?
The sum total of behaviors, attitudes, beliefs, and values that are characteristic of an individual
What is personality?
A primary group composed of individuals of roughly equal age and similar social characteristics.
What are peer groups?
Wild or untamed children
What are feral children?
The unsocialized, spontaneous, self-interested component of personality and self identity
What is the I?
The conscious awareness of possessing a distinct identity that separates you and your environment from other members of society
What is the self?
Instruments of communication that reach large audiences with no personal contact between those sending the information and those receiving it.
What is mass media?
The transmission of genetic characteristics from parents to children
What is heredity?
Internalized attitudes, exceptions and viewpoints of society
What is the generalized other?
The interactive process by which we develop an image of ourselves based on how we imagine we appear to others
What is the looking-glass self?
A setting in which people are isolated from the rest of society for a set period of time and are subject to tight control.
What is total institution?
A capacity to learn a particular skill or a particular body of knowledge
What is aptitude?
The part of ourself that is aware of expectations and attitudes of society; the socialized self
What is the me?
A newly born human being who's personality can be shaped with any characteristic we choose to give them
What is a tabula rasa?
Involves a break with past experiences and the learning of new values and norms.
