What is weathering?

Weathering describes the breaking down or dissolving of rocks and minerals on the surface of the Earth.

100

What is erosion?

Erosion is the geological process in which earthen materials are worn away and transported by natural forces such as wind or water

100

What are sediments?

Sediment is a naturally occurring material that is broken down by processes of weathering and erosion

100

What is depositition?

Deposition is the laying down of sediment carried by wind, flowing water, the sea or ice.

100

What is mass wasting?

Mass wasting is the movement of rock and soil down slope under the influence of gravity.

200

What are some examples of physical weathering?

Some examples include:

- Glaciers

- Actions of animals

-Plants growing

-Moving Water

200

What are some causes of erosion?

winds, hard rains, and flowing water.

200

Where do sediments come from?

Sediments come from weathered pieces of rocks.

200

What elements effect deposition?

flowing water and steep slopes.
200

What triggers mass wasting?

Mass wasting often occurs when something changes to cause a landslide at a specific time.

300

What are some examples of chemical weathering?

Examples include:

-Acid rain

-Iron oxide (Rust)

300

How can erosion effect the earths surface?

Erosion can form caves and arch's.

300

What can sediments form?

Sediments can form sedimentary rock through the process of lithification.

300

How can deposition effect the Earths surface?

Deposition can deposit bits of eroded soil and rock in  one spot and eventually build up new land.

300

What is the major force of mass wasting?

Gravity is the main driving force behind mass-wasting processes

400

How do glaciers cause abrasion and weathering?

The ice at the bottom of a glacier is not clean but usually has bits of rock, sediment, and debris.  It is rough, like sandpaper. As it flows down, sliding and flowing ice can weather the rock.

400

How does erosion work with weathering?

Weathering breaks down rocks while erosion moves and carry them away.

400

What are some ways sediments can be transported?

The main ways sediments can be moved include gravity, river and stream flows, ice, wind and ocean currants.

400

Where does deposition mostly occur?

Sediment deposition can be found anywhere in a water system, from high mountain streams, to rivers, lakes, deltas and floodplains.

400

What elements effect mass wasting?

Increased water, increased slope steepness, and earthquakes.

500

What are some causes of weathering?

Water, ice, acids, salts, plants, animals, and changes in temperature.

500

What are some everyday examples of erosion?

One example of erosion could be when it rains in my backyard, the rain carries the soil to the edge of my backyard near the fence and creates a huge mud puddle.

500

What are some real life examples of sedimentary rocks?

Some famous examples include the Grand Canyon.

500

why does deposition occur?

deposition may take place when a river enters an area with shallow water or when the volme of water decreases.

500

What are some examples of mass wasting?

Rock falls, slumps, and debris flows are all examples of mass wasting
