An organization formed for the purpose of representing their members and resolving conflicts with employers.
What is a Union?
A written contract between the employer and a union that outlines many of the terms and conditions of employment for employees in a bargaining unit.
What is a Collective Agreement?
A person must be a union member before being hired.
What is a Closed Shop?
A collective decision by the union members not to work or to slow down until certain demands or conditions are met.
What is a Strike?
A field that emphasizes skills managers and union leaders can use to minimize costly forms of conflict and seek win–win solutions to disagreements.
What is Labour Relations?
Labour union whose members all have a particular skill or occupation.
What is a Craft Union?
This process goes on day by day and includes carrying out the terms of the agreement and resolving conflicts over interpretation or violation of the agreement.

An employee is required to join the union within a certain amount of time after starting employment.

A closure of a place of employment or refusal of the employer to provide work to compel employees to agree to certain demands or conditions.

Unionized workers from a particular location, department etc. covered by a specific collective agreement.

A provision that makes the payment of union dues mandatory even if the worker is not a member of the union.
What is the Rand Formula?
A neutral party hears the views of both sides and facilitates the negotiation process but has no formal authority to dictate a resolution.

Union members choose to vote out an existing union.
What is Decertifying a Union (Decertification)?
Union members are linked by their work in an industry.
What is an Industrial Union?
Negotiation between union representatives and management representatives to arrive at an agreement defining conditions of employment for the term of the agreement and to administer that agreement.
What is Collective Bargaining?
A requirement that the employer, on behalf of the union, automatically deducts union dues from employees’ paycheques.

A third party reports the reasons for dispute, the views, and arguments of both sides, and possibly a recommended settlement, which the parties may decline.

A specialized tribunal with authority to interpret and enforce the labour laws in its jurisdiction.

An association that seeks to advance the shared interests of its member unions.

Effective day-to-day relationship between labour and management and acceptance that greater cooperation is beneficial.
What is Labour-Management Cooperation?
When unions engage in activities intended to influence social and economic policies of government.
What is Social Unionism?
The most formal type of outside intervention where an individual or board determines a binding settlement.
What is Arbitration?
A current political party, previously known as the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation, that supported early unionization in Canada.
