An aural hematoma is when blood pools between the skin and cartilage of the pinna as a result of trauma. It forms when a dog's ear becomes matted, the matted restricts blood flow to the ear, when the mat is removed the blood rushed back to the ear causing swelling and an uncomfortable sensation, causing the dog to shake its head, leading to the blood vessels bursting and forming a hematoma
