Good Conversation Starters
100

You are starting your shift and see a coworker in the staff room. What could you say to start a conversation?

How can you keep the conversation going? Think about your body language. Please roleplay this for extra practice.

Possible answers:

  • “Hi! How is your day going?”
  • “Are you working here all day today?”
  • “Has it been busy so far?”

In Roleplay:

Try to:

  1. Greet the person.
  2. Ask one appropriate question.
  3. Respond to their answer.

You are waiting for a workshop to begin. Another participant is sitting beside you and you want to chat with them. You love Ariana Grande (or choose another artist) and want to talk about her new upcoming album. But the participant seems to be on their phone. What can you do?

Roleplay it with Guy!

Possible answers:

  • Wait until they look up from their phone.
  • Smile and say, “Hi, is it okay if I ask you a question?”
  • Say, “Hi! Do you like Ariana Grande?”
  • Notice that they may be busy and decide to wait.
  • If they give a short answer or return to their phone, politely end the conversation.

Remember: someone being on their phone does not always mean they do not want to talk, but it is important to check first and respect their response.
