"-ions"
(Chapter 5)
When one species lives in or on another organism.
What is "parasitism"?
Competition between different species.
What is "interspecific competition"?
Biome with enough average annual precipitation to support the growth of tree species and smaller forms of vegetation.
What is a "Forest"?
Grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, synthetic inorganic fertilizers, and genetically engineered varieties.
What is “organic agriculture”?
Has few individual survivors that the species could soon become extinct.
What is an "endangered species"?
When two species behave in ways that benefit both by providing each with food, shelter, or some other resource.
What is "mutualism"?
Occurs when different species competing for similar resources evolve traits that allow them to "share" resources.
What is "resource partitioning"?
The removal of trees from a forested area.
What is "deforestation"?
Uses motorized equipment along with large amounts of financial capital, fossil fuels, water, commercial inorganic fertilizers, and pesticides to grow crops.
What is “industrialized agriculture”?
Can survive in the short term, but because of declining numbers, it is likely to become endangered in the future.
What is a "threatened species"?
An interaction that benefits one species but has little, if any, beneficial or harmful effect on the other.
What is "commensalism"?
In this, a member of one species is the predator that feeds directly on all or part of a member of another species.
What is "predation"?
An uncut or regrown forest that has not been seriously disturbed by human activities or natural disasters for 200 years or more.
What is an "old-growth forest"?
Combines energy from the sun with the labor of humans & animals to produce enough crops for a farm family’s survival, with little left over to sell or store away.
What is “traditional subsistence agriculture”?
Species with a capacity for a high rate of population increase.
What is a "R-selected species"?
Involves the gradual establishment of communities of different species in lifeless areas.
What is "primary ecological succession"?
A process where changes in the gene pool of one species leads to the changes in the gene pool of another species.
What is "coevolution"?
A stand of trees resulting from secondary ecological succession.
Such forests develop after the trees in an area have been removed by human activities, such as clear-cutting for timber.
What is a "second-growth forest"?
Farmers try to obtain higher crop yields by increasing their inputs of human & animal labor.
With good weather, farmers can produce enough food to feed their families and have some left over to sell for income.
What is “traditional intensive agriculture”?
Species that tend to reproduce later in life, have few offspring, and have long life spans.
What is a "K-selected species"?
When a community develops on an existing system, replacing or adding to the resident species.
What is "secondary ecological succession"?
Why doesn't anyone remember Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day?
Doctor Strange casts a spell at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home to erase everyone's memory of Peter Parker.
A managed forest that contains only one or two species of trees that are all of the same age.
Old-growth or second-growth forests are often cleared for timber and then replaced by this.
What is a "tree plantation/tree farm"?
Involves using a variety of methods to reduce topsoil erosion and restore soil fertility, mostly by keeping the land covered in vegetation.
What is "soil conservation"?
The "R" & "K" in "R-selected species" and "K-selected species" both represent a term.
What is "[growth] Rate" and "Carrying capacity"?
