ACT tips and tricks
I should choose this answer if I am totally unsure of what else to choose, ESPECIALLY if the question mentions the words CONCISE or LEAST REDUNDANT.
What is the shortest answer?
This four letter noun starts with an F and means an imperfection or defect.
What is a flaw?
Again with the prefix SUB! This word means to provide evidence to support something. Maybe we can say we need to stack the evidence under the claim in order to support it!
What is substantiate?
I reluctantly agree. Actually, I guess I am doing this verb, which starts with A. It's such an easy word, but definitely not one you hear often!
What is acquiesce?
This country is an island, but also a continent!
What is Australia?
If I see two answer options with these punctuation marks used correctly, I can assume I shouldn't choose either one.
What are a semicolon and a period?
I might tell my ten year old to be a help rather than this, a noun meaning something that provides resistance or obstruction.
What is a hindrance?
This nine letter noun always makes me feel good, which is really weird, because the prefix means "to move closer to," the base word is a high pitched howl, and the suffix is simply the act of.
What is adulation?
This is one of my favorite words! Imagine a room full of angry parrots. Actually, angry hens would be easy to remember, once you hear this word beginning with C.

This planet is known as the red planet!
What is Mars?
Knowing prefixes can help me determine the meaning of unknown words. For example, the prefix SUB means this, which can help me with some of the words in the other categories.
What is under or beneath?
Meaning not obvious or difficult to perceive, I might not want this kind of hint when I really need help figuring something out!
What is subtle?
If I am extremely thirsty or dry, I might say I'm this adjective, which can also be a verb, depending on how it is used.

If you have ever read "The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County," you know what it means when you hear that someone is GARRULOUS. I think ol' Simon Wheeler was just lonely.

I hope I never lose a thumb. If I do, though, this appendage has been proven an effective replacement!

I have an intense feeling or longing for something. In fact, I would go so far as to say I am this verb, which starts with Y.
What is yearning?
Coming from the Latin word where "in" means not and the rest of the word means anxious, this word is often used to humorously describe someone who is fearless or very adventurous. It was also the name of a Dodge car, years ago.
What is intrepid?
I never thought this would be on the "hard" word list! This adjective meaning outstandingly bad or shocking just makes me think of green eggs and ham every time I see it.
What is, egregious?
This term means that someone is petrified of spiders! Makes sense, since the second half of the word means fear or panic, while the first half of the word is literally what spiders are called.

When trying to determine correct answers on the ACT English section, crossing out these useless little phrases can really help me gain clarity!
What are prepositional phrases?
This adverb starting with sub comes after the word STATIC in the dictionary. Hmm...it also means after!
What is subsequently? (or subsequent)
Oops, I acted very impulsively when I made this clue. Impulsive sounds negative, so I think I'll go with this adverb, which means "acted on impulse" and sounds a lot more attractive!
What is spontaneously?
Not to be confused with the previous clue, this word which sounds similar (ish) actually means fond of company or sociable.
What is gregarious?
25 years ago today, this happened to our great nation.
