When Katie Clean invited Messy Missy to her house to work on their biology project, she had no idea what a visit from Messy Missy entailed. First of all, it was raining and Messy Missy neither bothered to take her boots off nor thoroughly wiped them on the doormat. Then Messy Missy ate a bag of hot chips on Katie Clean’s white bedspread without asking. Messy Missy is a sloppy eater too, so hot chip powder got all over the bedspread. Katie Clean tried to be polite and ignore Messy Missy’s sloppy behavior. But then Messy Missy threw her chip wrapper on the floor. Offended, Katie Clean pretended that she was sick and asked Messy Missy to leave. The next day Katie Clean asked the teacher if she could work by herself. After Katie explained the situation, the teacher allowed Katie to work alone. Messy Missy almost finished the assignment alone, but she spilled grape soda all over it and quit.

It's hard to imagine what things were like before there was money, but such a time did exist. During these times people exchanged goods using the barter system. The word barter means to trade. People using the barter system traded things instead of buying and selling them. So if you were a rice farmer, you would trade your rice with many people to get all the things that you wanted or needed. Unfortunately, the people from whom you needed things might not want your rice. Isn't it nice to just go to the store and buy candy instead of having to trade rice for it?

What is the main idea of this passage?

People used the barter system as a means to trade.

Barry liked playing board games, but he hated losing. He hated losing so much that he would do whatever it took to win, even bending or breaking the rules. He'd steal money from the bank and hide it under the couch cushions. He'd skip spaces while he was moving around the board. He'd shortchange others money that they were owed and argue with them about it. Barry's techniques were effective. He did win most of the games that he played, but the people whom he played with were his friends and family, and it didn't take too long until they caught on to Barry's tricks. They tried to tell Barry to stop cheating. They said that the game wasn't any fun when he cheated, but he didn't listen. He continued with his treacherous style of gameplay, until nobody would play with him anymore. Barry may have won a lot of games, but at what cost?

Don't cheat!

Dr. Miller doesn’t want the tigers to vanish.  These majestic beasts are disappearing at an alarming rate.  Dr. Miller thinks that we should write to our congress people.  If we let them know that we demand the preservation of this species, maybe we can make a difference.  Dr. Miller also thinks that we should donate to Save the Tigers.  Our donations will help to support and empower those who are fighting the hardest to preserve the tigers.  We owe it to our grandchildren to do something.

Counterfeiting is the act of making phony money that looks official. It is a very old crime but recent advances in printing have made it possible for even amateurs to produce decent counterfeits. Fortunately, there are some ways that you can detect counterfeits. The first and most telling inspection is to pay attention to how the money feels. It is difficult to reproduce the texture of real money. If the money feels suspect, look carefully at the microprinting on the bill. Many features along the portrait and border of a genuine bill contain writing that is too small to reproduce in most printers. If you are still suspicious, hold the bill up to the light and look for the strip that says the value of the bill. With a little diligence, you can keep yourself from becoming a victim of this rising trend.

Ana saw that one of his legs was crooked, bent a little sideways between the knee and the ankle. A broken leg! 21 She remembered what the first-aid book had said about broken legs: If there is no ambulance, stabilize the bone before moving the victim. 22 There certainly wouldn’t be any ambulance here. Ana looked back up the road. The other kids were still standing there, watching.

What is the meaning of the word stabilize?

Keep still

Twin brothers Jack and Willie had more differences than commonalities. Willie was tall and Jack was short. Willie was always joking around while Jack was a very serious person. Perhaps their greatest difference was that Willie learned things quickly and easily in school while Jack had to study long and hard. Willie had the time of his life during high school. He played around a lot, did very little work, and managed to get Cs in most of his classes. On the other hand, Jack had a difficult time during high school. He played around very little, worked really hard, and, like Willie, managed to get Cs in most of his classes. When the twins went away to college, they acted in much the same way even though things had changed. Willie went right to his usual tricks of skating by and doing as little as possible, while Jack continued to work hard in all of his classes. Since he had worked hard his whole life, Jack noticed that the work in college was much more difficult, but he was prepared for it. Willie did not really notice that the difficulty had changed until the semester was over. Jack managed to get Bs and Cs in all of his courses while Willie earned mainly Ds and Fs and was placed on academic probation.

Its important to put in the hard work because it will pay off in the end

A smart phone is a mobile phone with built-in computer system that can send emails, view websites, or download applications. The first use of the term smart phone was in 1997, when Ericson described its GS 88 as a “smart phone.” In 2003 phones got even smarter when Andy Rubin launched the Android mobile operating system. It would take years for the first Android powered phone to reach the market, but today over 80% of all mobile phones are powered by Android. Yet, perhaps the biggest development in the history of smart phones occurred in 2007, when the original iPhone was released. The first iPhone didn’t even have an app store, but it set many of the standards that people have come to expect from smart phones, like using the phone with just a finger on the screen rather than with a keypad or stylus. Smart phones have changed the world and continue to improve. I don’t know where the future will take us, but I bet that the phones will be cooler

How many times have your parents told you to eat your vegetables? Well, things haven’t changed much in the last few hundred years. Kids who grew up before 1492 had to eat their vegetables, too. Three of these vegetables were so important that some American Indians called them “our supporters” or “the three sisters.” Corn, beans, and squash were the main foods of many Indian tribes, from the Iroquois in the Northeast to the Navajo in the Southwest.

Why were these three vegetables called the three sisters? Native people, such as the Iroquois who lived in what is now New York State, had a smart way to plant them. Corn was planted first. When the tiny corn shoots poked through the ground, it was time to plant the beans. As the corn grew, the bean vines climbed up the cornstalks. When the bean vines began to climb, it was time to plant the squash between the corn plants. As the squash plants grew, their leaves shaded the ground, keeping weeds out and keeping the soil cool and moist for the beans and corn. By sharing the land, the three sisters helped each other grow.

Corn, also known as maize, was the most important crop for many Native people. It was eaten in many ways, from corn on the cob to cornmeal1 pancakes sweetened with maple syrup. Beans and squash rounded out the diets of people all over North America. Of course, vegetables were not the only food Indians ate. Depending on where they lived, they might have eaten buffalo meat, deer, rabbit, salmon, and shellfish. Wild berries were a welcome sweet treat.

For many Native people, the three sisters were considered gifts from the Creator.3 They were protected by Three Sister Spirits and were meant to be planted, eaten, and celebrated together

The three sisters, corns, beans, and sqaush were very important foods to Native Americans

There were so many people at the auction, I couldn’t see what was happening. I had to stand on my tiptoes to get a glimpse of each foal that was brought out. But I could hear the bidding and the crowd going wild. When the price was as high as it could go, the auctioneer yelled, “Sold!” Then another foal would come out, and the bidding would start all over again.

What is the meaning of the phrase Get a glimpse of?

To get a look at; to see

Tall and bold like a castle

Looming in the dark.

They rise to a towering height.

As everything beneath, cowers in fright.

What is a theme of the poem “Mountains”?

Covered in a blanket of silvery mist,

You feel as though kissed,

By the cold bitter wind as it rushes past.

The snow-peaked tops are like pure, pristine crystals, timeless,

in all their beauty

You can smell, feel, taste, and hear all the earth around you.

The sound of birds chirping like music boxes,

The taste of juicy berries bursting with flavor,

The smell of fresh pine air,

And the feeling of pine needles,

which, I declare

Feel great on your sore, blistered feet.

We realize beauty is all around us, but we must take time to notice

Almost everybody loves pizza, but try to get a group of people to agree on a pizza order and you’ll quickly find that not everybody likes their pizza the same way. Perhaps such disagreements led to the many distinct pizza styles that can currently be found in America. These pizza styles are currently categorized by region and three of the most popular pizza styles are the New York-style, the Chicagostyle, and the Detroit-style. All of these pizza styles contain dough, sauce, cheese, and other toppings, but it’s the way that these ingredients are utilized that gives them their unique regional flair. The New York-style pizza is thin. New York-style slices are cut into large triangles that can be folded and this pizza is commonly sold by the slice. Chicago-style pizza is marked by its deep dish crust, which can be up to three inches tall at the edge. Toppings are heavily applied to these pizzas, as is characteristic of the style, and they are generally sold as whole pies rather than slices. Then there’s the Detroit-style pizza, which is not circular like the Chicago and New York-style pizzas, but square like the Sicilianstyle pizzas. The Detroit-style pizza is similar to the Chicago-style pizza in that these pizzas both have thick crusts, but the Detroit-style pizza is twice-baked, giving it a chewy crust that is crispy around the edges. Pizza styles in America may vary greatly by region, but they are all delicious if you ask me.
