A man calls in, in great health. He just retired on 10/2/26 and loses active coverage at the end of the month. He doesn't qualify for a tax credit in 2026 and will be pulling $65,000 a year from his 401k in 2027. Prices for a catastrophic plan are $1,500 a month which he doesn't want to afford. What is your suggestion for him to do in 2026 and 2027? (Subjective I know but you should agree with my answer)

He should not sign up for anything for Nov and Dec in hopes that he is healthy and he has the COBRA to fall back on if needed. Then suggest he stay below $63,000 in 2027 and get a large tax credit to get a plan for free. Be sure to warn him of the worst case scenario if he goes over 63k. This will give him the greatest amount of coverage for the best price.
