What was the 1881 – 1899 Mahdist War?

The Mahdist War (1881–1899) was an expansive colonial conflict fought between the Mahdist Sudanese forces, led by the self-proclaimed "Mahdi" Muhammad Ahmad bin Abdullah, and the combined forces of the Khedivate of Egypt and the British Empire, culminating in the establishment of Anglo-Egyptian rule in Sudan. 

The conflict originated in 1881 when Muhammad Ahmad declared a holy war (jihad) to overthrow the oppressive Ottoman-Egyptian administration and spread his religious movement across Sudan. Following a series of military successes, the Mahdist forces successfully laid siege to the city of Khartoum from March 1884 to January 1885. The siege ended with a final assault by Mahdist troops on January 26, 1885, overwhelming the garrison, resulting in General Gordon's death and the Mahdist forces taking control of the city. This devastating loss sent shockwaves through the British Empire, which formally withdrew from the region. 

Over the next decade, a theocratic Mahdist State was established, which subsequently engaged in conflicts with neighboring powers including Ethiopia, Italy, and the Congo. In 1896, the British Empire launched a campaign to reconquer Sudan under the command of General Herbert Kitchener. Utilizing modern machine guns and new supply lines, the British defeated the Mahdists at Omdurman, a suburb of Khartoum, with the Mahdists losing around 10,000 men compared to the British loss of less than 50. The decisive defeat at the Battle of Omdurman effectively broke the Mahdist state, and the conflict officially concluded in 1899 with the death of the Mahdi's successor. This paved the way for the creation of the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, a condominium in which Britain wielded de facto control.
