Epidermal derivatives
What are sebaceous glands, sweat glands, hair, and nails?
Types of membranes
What are cutaneous, mucous, serous, and synovial?
Layers of epidermis
Stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum, and stratum cornosum
The most superficial epidermal layer with fully keratinized dead skin cells
What is the stratum cornosum?
A type of burn where the skin is red and swollen, the epidermis is destroyed, and it heals in 2-3 days
What is first degree burn?
A flexible epithelial structure made from heavily keratinized cells with pigment from melanocytes is
What is hair?
The skin membrane that is the dry outermost layer and protective covering of the body
What is the cutaneous membrane?
The layer where the stem cells divide, the deepest layer of the epidermis
What is the stratum basale?
Layers of the dermis
Papillary layer and reticular layer
A type of burn where the skin is red, swollen, and has blisters. The epidermis and part of the dermis are destroyed, but they can still heal on their own
What is second degree burn?
A colorless scale like modification of the epidermis with a body, free edge, and root
What is a nail?
It lines body cavities that open to the EXTERIOR and aids in absorbtion and secretion made up of epithelium with underlying connective tissue (lamina propria)
What is the mucous membrane?
The layer the connects to adjacent cells and is the second deepest epidermal layer
What is the stratum spinosum?
The layer that contains the dermal papillae, capillary loops, and pain receptors
What is the papillary layer?
A type of burn where the skin is blackened or blanched, no pain is present because nerves are destroyed. Both the dermis and the epidermis are destroyed and skin grafting is required to heal
What is a third degree burn?
Oil glands found all over the skin, except in the palms and soles of the feet, that typically empty into a hair follicle
What are sebaceous glands?
It lines body cavities that open to the INTERIOR and is made up of simple squamous epithelium and areolar tissue separated by fluid
What is the serous membrane?
The layer where skin cells begin to die and contains granules of keratin, the third deepest epidermal layer
What is the stratum granulosum?
The layer that contains the blood vessels, glands, and nerve receptors
What is the reticular layer?
Types of skin cancer
Malignant melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and basale cell carcinoma
Also known as sweat glands, they produce and secrete sweat and have 2 different types (apocrine and eccrine)
What is a sudoriferous gland?
Only made up of connective tissue, it lines the fibrous capsules surrounding joints
What is the synovial membrane?
The second most superficial epidermal layer that only exists in thick skin
What is the stratum lucidum?
Types of burns
What are first degree, second degree, and third degree?
1. Type of cancer that metastisizes quickly and is a cancer of the melanocyte. It has a 50% survival rate
2. Type of cancer that forms in the stratum spinosum, metastasizes to the lymph nodes, and has a good chance of recovery if removed early
3. Type of cancer that is most common, forms in the stratum basale, is the least malignant skin cancer, and it metastasizes slowly
What are 1. malignant melanoma, 2. squamous cell carcinoma, and 3. basal cell carcinoma?
