If a goat did not have a strong enough ___________ their udder would "drop off". What is the _________?
Blank 1: medial suspensory ligament Blank 2:the medial suspensory ligament is the "cleft" in the udder. Having too taught a medial suspensory ligament makes for poor milk production, but so does having too weak a medial suspensory ligament.

While doing your showmanship class, the judge asks you to switch does with the person in front of you. You have been showing a placid Nigerian Dwarf, but you receive a jumpy Alpine who is much more than you think you can handle. You should focus on A.) correct control of the animal; B.) having the animal set up and looking "showy", or C.) keeping up with the class, and keeping your eye on the judge
A.) it is always better to appear in control of your doe in showmanship. If you can successfully control the animal, making the animal look "showy"comes in second. It is a good idea to keep up with your class, but if the animal is much too large for you, the judge will more likely want to see that you can handle it.

You are given a doe to show that you have never seen before. She is a toggenburg doe, 5 years old, in milk, her hocks turn in more than preferred and her topline is slightly downhill (her rump is too high). What can you do to show this doe well, acknowledging her faults?
Since she is in milk, it will be best to set her hind legs more widely apart, and while doing this, you should set her hocks slightly outward, or set her toes more inward (this will turn out her hocks). For her topline, is is a wise choice to tickle her down more than is usually necessary on a goat with a level or uphill topline.

What is CAE?
CAE, or (Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis), is a nervous disease in goats. It leads to Arthritis, and can cause encephalitis (inflammation in the substance of the brain), in kids and chronic joint disease in adults. It is also known as the "Silent Killer" because goats can go on for many years without exhibiting symptoms of the disease, then unexpectedly die. (it is unexpected if the owners do not know about their goat being infected.) CAE is passed on in breeding.

You are given a baby saanen to show, you have never met her. However you do know that she is 4 months old, very skittish, very dependent on her mother, and has never been trained. Her lead is too big for her, and you are afraid she will get loose. After studying her faults as she stands quietly nursing her dam to even out her dam's udder, you see that she is a very uphill doeling (her back slopes down from her withers to her rump more than is natural); her toes turn in on all four legs. She jumps away whenever you try to touch her, and screams bloody murder for her mom. How might you show this doeling successfully?
First, do all you can to keep the doeling calm BEFORE you enter the show ring. You can scratch her withers, or stroke her neck. Also, you can talk to her in a calming voice, and telling her that everything will be fine. (Goats enjoy the sound of kind human voices). Next, as her lead is far too big, you need to hold the loose part in your fist, not like you usually do, in the palm of your hand. As for her conformation, you will want to set her hind legs less widely apart to help raise her rump. You can also set her legs so that her toes are turned out. But as she is very jumpy, do the best you can keeping her in one place.
