Active transport is the movement of substances against their concentration gradient (from low concentration to high concentration), which requires energy (ATP). Transport proteins in the cell membrane use that energy to move molecules where the cell needs them. A common example is the sodium-potassium pump, which uses ATP to move Na⁺ out of the cell and K⁺ into the cell.

An action potential begins when a stimulus causes the neuron to reach threshold. Voltage-gated Na⁺ channels open, allowing sodium to rush into the cell, causing depolarization (the inside becomes more positive). Then Na⁺ channels close and K⁺ channels open, allowing potassium to leave the cell, causing repolarization (the inside becomes negative again). The neuron briefly hyperpolarizes before returning to its resting potential and becoming ready to fire again.
