Who pioneered the modern driveshaft and U-joint?
Clarence Spicer. SLIDE SHOW
What is the purpose of the driveline?
Transfer torque from the transmission to the axle.
Can you have too much angle for a u-joint?
Yes or No
Yes
How often do you grease hanger bearings?
You don’t, they are lubed for life.
What components does a typical axle contain?
Axle shafts and a differential carrier assembly.
Why are driveshaft’s of tubular in design?
They can sustain high torque and be light in weight.
What driveshaft four variation ratings is the most common?
1700-series
Are all drivelines single piece, multi piece or both?
Both
Why are proper u-joint angles required?
Vibration free and long-lasting driveline operation.
What does the steering axle do?
Support the forward weight and steer.
How many common methods are there to secure the u-joint to the yoke?
Four
What does a standpipe do for the u-joint?
Prevents reverse flow of the hot liquid lubricant generated during operation.
What does Table 23-2 talk about?
Correlates expected driveshaft rpm with maximum working angles.
Besides grease what else is an addition?
Polymer nylon coating
How does a controlled traction differential work?
Uses friction plate assembly during uneven or slippery road conditions.
What happens when you use and oversized driveshaft?
You put unnecessary loads on the transmission and axle components.
What determines the wall thickness of the tube?
Maximum torque, vehicle payload, type of operation, road conditions, and peak brake torque
What are the two geometric configurations used to transmit torque?
Parallel-joint driveline and nonparallel driveline or broken-back driveline.
What is the ideal angle on each end of a driveshaft?
Should be within one degree of each other and have a 3 degree-maximum operating angle.
What can you do to gain more traction in your own truck?
Install a locking differential
When is a delta wing u-joint used on a loader?
4- to 8- yard loaders.
What should you do if you are installing a new hanger bearing?
Fill the entire cavity around the bearing assembly.
Where is the high-block cap u-joint found?
On large equipment between transmission and the final drive.
Is driveline balancing IS as APPARENT on off road equipment as it is on highway equipment?
No
What is the difference between full floating axles and semi floating axles?
In a semi floating axle, the axle supports the weight and if it were to break the tire would fall off.
In a full floating the axles only transmit drive torque, if the axle were to break the tire would stay attached.
