Majority of Shi‘a mujtahidin (such as Ayatullah Khu'i and Imam Khumayni) believe that yes, kufr and shirk makes a person physically najis. However, there is a minority opinion which confines the najasat of kufr and shirk to the spiritual level only. Ayatullah Sistani has lately changed his view and considers a disbeliever to be najis on basis of obligatory precaution only, while Ayatullah Makarim Shirazi considers a disbeliever to be pure. Students should follow the opinion of their own mujtahid.
