According to Merton's (1938) Anomie Theory, there are five modes of adaptation. List and explain 3. Which is most likely to be a criminal?

*DOUBLE JEOPARDY

Conformists accept societal goals of success and follow legitimate/legal means to obtain them. Example: Most law abiding citizens, Leslie Knope.

Innovators (CRIMINALS) accept the goals of success, but do not have legitimate means, so they use criminal activities to achieve their success (monetary or otherwise). Example: Drug dealers.

Ritualists do not care about the goals of society, but strive to follow the legal means everyday. Example: Hardworking teachers who do not aim to get wealthy.

Retreatists have escaped from society's ideas of goals and means; they either do not care about either or are incapable of caring about them. Example: Ron Swanson (hates the government, likes to be alone in the woods whenever possible).

Rebels want to overthrow society's goals and means and create their own. Example: Katniss Everdeen

In terms of their killing, how do psychopaths and sociopaths differ?

Psychopathic serial killers tend to use killing as a means to an end. They are better at controlling their impulses, remaining calm, and have sadistic goals. Similarly, they have higher IQ levels and they do experience empathy, in that they can relate to the fear of their victims but use it to provide pleasure for themselves. One example is Ted Bundy.

Sociopathic serial killers, on the other hand,  usually kill when they feel as though they have been insulted or humiliated, like they were as a child. They do not control their impulses well and have lower IQs and little, if no, empathy. An example is Henry Lee Lucas.

Cesare Beccaria proposed Deterrence Theory! In order for punishment to prevent future crime, he said it must satisfy three conditions. What are they? Explain each one!

Under his theory, punishment must be:

1. Swift: It must quickly follow the criminal behavior.

2. Severe: It must fit the crime/be proportional to the crime.

3. Certain: The would-be offender must be certain that they will get caught (in order to avoid committing the crime in the first place).

According to Hirschi, it is worthwhile to investigate why people do NOT commit crime. He proposes that four areas help people refrain from committing crime.

1. Attachment: One's attachment to their family, friends, role models, teammates, etc.

2. Commitment: One's commitment to their future goals, career, etc.

3. Involvement: Often, people who are involved in groups, events, and activities have less time to dedicate to crime, but their involvement in these activities prevent them from wanting to commit crime. Example: Being a student athlete (very involved in school and sports).

4. Belief: One's personal belief system/morality precludes them from engaging in crime.
