Why is specificity important when naming emotions?

When it comes to emotions, specificity matters. One of the key benefits of naming emotions is that it improves our self-awareness. By identifying the exact emotion we’re feeling, we allow ourselves to fully experience it, understand its purpose, and use it as it’s meant to function.

For example, By naming an emotion like “annoyance” instead of simply labeling it as “anger,” your emotional experience might naturally down-regulate. You might realize that the situation isn’t as intense as it first seemed. This allows you to respond more appropriately and with greater control. This is a huge win for emotional regulation!
