In 1949, the Communists won the war, and the nationalists fled to Taiwan and continued the Republic of China there.  Today, both sides claim to be the legitimate government of China, and both sides claim Taiwan as their own.

In 1917, the British shared their support for establishing a Jewish state in Palestine with the Balfour Declaration. In 1945 Palestine was controlled by British troops. It was mostly populated by Muslim Arabs (Palestinians), but Jews all over the world (diaspora) saw this area as their homeland.  During WWII some persecuted Jews managed to escape to Palestine.  After WWII, the UN decided that the Jews should have their own country, and on May 14, 1948, the Jewish state of Israel was created in Palestine.
