1)Where does most of our body's energy come from? 2)How do we convert this source into energy? 3)How is it stored in our body?
Most of our body's energy comes from nutrients and sugars from the food we conusme. Our body uses enzymes that break down nutrients for the body.Amylase breaks down the starch in the food into simple sugar.(energy, glucose, or ATP) Fat and sugars store energy in the body.

Moving Right Along
The tennis ball represents the bolus, since it is moving down the digestive tract. It is also a ball shape. The food was pushed by muscles through the digestive tract through sphincters. Similarly, our hands pushed the ball throught the tube, through the rubber bands. ALSO,STUDY T-CHART IN LAB NB

How does food pass through the digestive system?
1-Mouth 2-Esophagus 3-Stomach 4-Small intestine 5-Large Instestine 6-Rectum It breaks down as it passes through

Examples of the 6 nutrients.
C-Complex carbohydrates(pasta, bread, rice) and Simple carbohydrates(sugar) P-Eggs,cheese and nuts are rich in protein F-Avacados are a source of unsaturated fat V-Vitamin A,B,C,D etc.- Vitamin C is found in oranges M- Zinc, copper,iron,etc.-Fruits and Vegetables W-Water!

Exploring Carbohydrates Lab
All foods(marshmallow, potato buds, tapioca, corn starch) except water and sugar tested positive to Lugol solution. This means that all the tested food except sugar and water have starch. Sugar, marshmallow, and potato buds tested positive to Benedicts solution. This means that these three foods contain sugar. ALSO, STUDY THE VENN DIAGRAM BELOW QUESTIONS

Name the 2 different processes that food is broken down by.
Chemical Digestion:Enzyme activity marks the beginning of chemical digestion. This is an involuntary process. Mechanical Digestion: Voluntary.Tearing, grinding and mixing of food as it goes through the digestion process. (especially the teeth and toungue.)

What is the relationship between starch and sugar?
Starch is simple sugar particles held together by chemical bonds. When these bonds break, they create sugar particles. OR(more detailed version) Starches are made up of chains of simple sugar particles that are held together by chemical bonds. A starch is related to sugar because once it’s chewed and acted on by digestive enzymes in the mouth and small intestine, the bonds that hold the links of the starch chain together break apart, which creates sugar particles

"Is My Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner Healthy?" Lab
Be able to look at a food label and answer the following questions: Look at the Ingredients listed. Which are sources of starch? Sugars? Fiber? Protein? Fat? What are the Percent Daily Values of carbohydrates, proteins and fats that you eat at this meal? What calorie diet is the Percent Daily Value based on?
