What are tides ?
Tides are the short term periodic rise and fall of the world's oceans.
What is a solar eclipse?
A solar eclipse is a lineup of the Sun, the Moon, and Earth.
How many phases does the moon have?
Eight
How long does it take for the earth to rotate around the sun?
about 365 1/4 days
what is revolution?
The motion of a body (earth) that is orbiting around another body.
What causes tides?
by the gravitational interaction between the Earth and the Moon.
When do solar eclipse occur?
A solar eclipse happens at New Moon. The Moon has to be between the Sun and Earth for a solar eclipse to occur.
What side of the moon do we see first?
dark side
How long does earth's rotation last?
about 24 hours
One full revolution equals ____
1 year
Does the sun or the moon have greater influence on the tides on earth?
The moon has the dominant effect.
Why don't solar eclipses happen at every New Moon?
The reason is that the Moon’s orbit tilts 5° to Earth’s orbit around the Sun. Astronomers call the two intersections of these paths nodes. Eclipses only occur when the Sun lies at one node and the Moon is at its New (for solar eclipses) or Full (for lunar eclipses) phase.
What is it called when the moon appears to grow?
wax
Rotation of the earth takes
one day
Evidence the earth revolves:
-the seasons
What are spring and neap tides?
Spring tides occur when the lunar and solar semi-diurnal tides interfere constructively.
Neap tides occur when the moon is at its first or third quarter.
What is a Lunar Eclipse?
an eclipse in which the moon appears darkened as it passes into the earth's shadow.
What is it called when the moon appears to get smaller?
wane
Rotation of the earth is what causes?
day and night
The Earth revolves around the sun?
counter clockwise
Why is high tide later each day?
high tides occur approximately every 12 hours 25 minutes. It takes 24 hours and 50 minutes (a lunar day) for the same location on Earth to re-align with the moon.
Why don't solar eclipses happen at every New Moon?
(Solar eclipses only happen when the Moon lies at one node (the intersection of the two lines in this graphic)
How many days does it take the moon to complete a cycle?
29 1/2 days or 1 month
The earth rotates in a ________ direction.
counter clockwise
Rate of revolution
1 degree per day
