Order the words community, population, ecosystem, and organism.  Provide an example of each.

An organism is a single living thing, such as a fish.

A population is a group of the same species living in the same area, such as a school of fish in the same area.

A community is a group of living things of different species living in the same area, such as a group of fish and birds that might eat the fish.

An ecosystem is the interactions of all the living and nonliving components in a specific area.  The ecosystem would include the fish, birds, water, the Sun, rocks in the bottom of the water, etc.

Explain how reintroducing the wolves to Yellowstone changed the ecosystem.

Reintroducing the wolves changed the Yellowstone ecosystem.  The wolves hunt the elk and deer.  Less deer and elk leads to more plant growth.  Rabbits and small animals can hide in the grass from their predators.  There are more berries, so the bear population increases.  Additionally, The deer and elk stop gathering at the water.  Their hooves caused erosion.  With less deer and elk gathering at the water, the water clears up.  There are more beavers and fish.

Explain how an abiotic factor could influence a biotic factor.

The Sun is an abiotic factor.  Plants, which are biotic, need the energy from the Sun to carry out photosynthesis and get energy.
