Name the four forces
Lift, Weight, Drag, and Thrust
Explain what parachutes are used for
Parachutes are used to slow down an object that is falling towards the ground.
Explain the meaning of renewable resources
Renewable resources can ge used again and again without running out in a lifetime
What is the meaning of Non-renewable resources?
Non-renewable resources are resouces that will not replenish themselves in a lifetime, and pollute the environment.
What does Conserving Energy mean?
Conserving ernergy means energy is not wasted and using it wisely.
What is the angle of attack?
The angle of attack is the angle a wing makes with oncoming airflow. Increasing the angle of will result in the plane going upwards, and decreasing it will lower the plane.
How do the pilots of an airship, make it go up and down?
To go up, they add helium to the ballonet. To go down, they add air to the ballonet.
What device is used to harness solar energy?
Solar Panels
List 4 non-renewable resources
1. Coal
2. Oil
3. Natural Gas
4. Nuclear energy
Which light bulb is the mst energy efficient?
Light Emitting Diodes(LED)
What is Aerodynamics, and what is the importance of Drag?
Aerodynamics means we make objects that have a shape which reduces the drag from air moving past.
Drag slows down objects in flight, which is important for regulating speed and landing.
How fast do Hummingbirds flap their wings?
80 times per second
Why does wind happen?
Wind happens when air moves from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure.
List 3 Advantages of Fossil Fuels
1. Abundant and Easy to Get
2. Reliable
3. Powerful
What is the by-product of Nuclear power?
Radioactive waste is the by-product of Nuclear Power.
What is CG and how can an airplane overcome excess weight? List 2 ways
CG(Centre of Gravity) is the point on an aircraft where it would be balanced if suspended in the air.
We can overcome excess weight by having a higher takeoff speed, longer runway, lower maximum altitude, shorter range, slower cruising speed, reduced maneuverability, higher approach and higher landing speed.
What do dolphins and barn swallows have to reduce their air resistance while they are in motion?
They both have streamlined bodies to reduce their air resistance.
List 3 Disadvantages of Tidal Energy
1. Limited Locations: It can only be harnessed in places with large tidal ranges
2. Enviormental Impact: It disrupts marine life
3. Expensive: It's expensive to build tidal power stations
What do Fossil Fuels come from?
Fossil Fuels come from the remains of plants and animals that lived millions of years.
What percentage of Alberta's electricity usage in Wind energy?
7%
Explain Bernoulli's and Newton's principals for the reason of Lift
Bernoulli's principal explains that lift ocurs when air pressure under the wing is higher than the air pressure over the wing. Higher pressure under the wing pushes the wing up and produces lift.
Newton's principal says that airplanes fly, because their wings deflect air downwards causing the plane to go up. To do this airplanes have to have alot of air diverted downwards to fly, so we require extremely fast takeoff speeds.
List all 5 physical features of birds that help them fly
1. Lightweight
2. Light Bones
3. Strong Flight Muscles
4. Wings
5. Streamlined Bodies
How do Hydroelectric dams work?
The water is built up in the reservoir. The intake allows water to travel down the penstock. The water flows consistently, spinning the turbine and generating electricity. That electricity is stored in the powerhouse, and transported to different places through long distance power lines.
How is Nuclear Energy produced?
Nuclear energy is produced by splitting a uranium atom into two smaller atoms.
What does ICE stand for?
ICE stands for 'Indigenous Clean Energy'.
