Introduction: Identify the hook, background information, and thesis statement.

Why does reality TV captivate millions of Americans? Before reality TV, television viewers seemed interested only in the fictional lives of characters in situational comedies and serial dramas. Professional actors played characters, and experienced writers wrote the shows. Eventually, Survivor debuted in the summer of 2000. When Survivor caught the viewers' attention and dominated television ratings, television networks changed their programming to compete. The problem with networks trying to copy Survivor is that the original Survivor offered more interesting elements to its audience than any reality TV show modeled after it. Reality TV shows following Survivor are less tasteful, lack drama, and rely on gimmicks.
