What is a run-on sentence?
It occurs when two or more independent clauses are not joined correctly.
What is a parallel sentence?
A sentence that repeats the same structure at least three times: the repetition can be as simple as three adjectives or adverbs or as complex as three equally-structured clauses: it creates balance, clarity, and emphasis.
What is padding?
It is useless words within a sentence that do not add anything to the context and are only there to seem intelligent and professional.
What is a comma splice?
It is a type of run-on sentence where the writer knows that a thought has ended and a new thought has begun; the comma does not have a joining word/ conjunction to properly connect the two thoughts.
What is a balanced sentence?
Similar to the parallel sentence, this sentence type uses repetition of a grammatical structure but always just twice. This repetition of structure is attention grabbing, memorable or catchy.
What is a cliche?
It is a phrase or opinion that is overused and unoriginal and are not personal thoughts but rather pre-made ideas.
What is a sentence fragment?
A sentence that seems complete but is not complete; it is either missing a subject, a verb or a complete thought.
What is a loose sentence?
It is always a complex sentence with one subordinate clause and one independent clause. For a loose sentence the independent clause is first, and the subordinate clause is second.
What is an independent clause?
A complete thought that contains a subject and a predicate and can stand on its own as a sentence.
What is a periodic sentence?
The opposite of a loose sentence, this sentence provides the subordinate clause first and the independent clause is second. The sentence creates some suspense or a stronger sense of cause and effect.
What is a subordinate clause?
A clause that cannot stand alone as a complete sentence.
What is a antithesis sentence?
It is a balanced sentence of opposites. It is a 'power-punch' of contrast, creating an instant and clear contrast that is short and to the point.
