Simple present is usually used when talking about daily activities or habits or events and situations that exist always, usually or habitually in the past, present and future. Present progressive is usually used when talking about an activity that is in progress. It is happening right now. The activity is in progress at the time the speaker is saying the sentence. The activity began in the past, is happening now and will probably continue into the future.
