The highest or ruling class in Sumer was made up of the king, important government officials, priests and warriors. The middle class was made up of less-important government officials, craft workers, farming supervisors, merchants, doctors, carpenters, potters, and bricklayers. Slaves and farm workers made up the lowest level, or working class.

What Innovations Helped the Sumerians Grow Enough Food?
Because Mesopotamia got little rainfall, Sumerian farmers had to find ways to use river water to irrigate their groups as well as protect their groups from flooding and drought. To solve these problems, the Sumerians found ways to change the rivers. They built dikes to control river flooding and filled reservoirs with water for later use. The Sumerians built canals to bring water to the fields in dry seasons. The Sumerians also used wheeled carts to carry crops and other heavy loads. They harvested donkeys and other domesticated animals to pull the carts. Finally, growing enough food to feed thousands of people living in a city-state took many workers and a division of labor.
