Apartheid: GO!
After South Africa gained independence, white South Africans created a system of legal segregation called Apartheid. Apartheid was first introduced in 1948, and it legally separated Blacks, Whites, Coloreds, and Asians in South Africa. Under Apartheid, the whites had the most power/freedom, the Asians and Coloreds had a little, and the Blacks had almost no rights. Black South Africans were moved to unclean townships that lacked resources and were require to carry passbooks when going in white areas. Nelson Mandela from the ANC protested Apartheid, however he was sent to jail. Students in Soweto township protested against Apartheid also, but many were killed by the government. Other countries opposed Apartheid so much, that they put all sorts of external pressure on South Africa, such as an arms embargo and economic sanctions. The external pressure eventually caused the release of Mandela and the end of Apartheid in 1991. Apartheid is important because it shows us how a horrible government system can be overthrown without violence, i.e. external pressure from other countries.
