How did one become a guild member?

Beginning at around age 12, a boy and sometimes a girl, became an apprentice. Then, after 7 years the apprentice had to prove that they had mastered their trade. To do so, the apprentice made a piece of work called a “master piece.” If the guild approved the work the apprentice was given the right to set up their own business.
