These controls are OSHA's preferred method in dealing with laboratory hazards.  These controls remove or reduce exposure to a hazard (chemical or physical) by considering the physical space, equipment and materials.

What are Engineering Controls?

These controls involve changes in work procedures to better protect employees.  This includes written policies, supervisory activities and training.

This duty requires you always advise students of dangers relative to safety prior to and during use of potentially hazardous equipment, materials, etc  For example:  remind students x-acto knives are sharp and can cut skin before use.  This includes taking tool or material specific safety quizzes as necessary.
