What are the two standard impact tests we use?
Izod & charpy
What does HDT stand for? DTUL?
Heat deflection temperature
Deflection temperature under load
What does MFR mean?
Melt flow rate
What are the standard ASTM units for izod impact? What about ISO?
Ft-lb/in
kJ/m²
Is HDT considered a short term temperature test? What about RTI?
HDT is short term
RTI is long term
What is the tradename for our TPC from Envalior?
ArnitelĀ®
In our PPC100/2I-20M NAT what does the 2I represent?
2 ft-lb/in izod
What does RTI tell us?
The temperature at which a material can withstand 100,000 hours and still maintain 50% of its original mech, imp, and electrical test values
What does UL 746A test for?
Short term electrical tests (CTI, HAI, etc.)
Describe the differences between charpy and izod impact testing
Izod is held as a cantilever beam held upright and the pendulum hits the top portion of the bar. If notched, the notch faces the pendulum.
Charpy is held horizontally and supported on both ends, the pendulum swings through the middle of the bar. If notched, the notch faces away from the pendulum.
What does CUT mean? How many hours does that typically account for?
Supplier dependent but 3,000-5,000 hours is common
Why do we not get melt flow testing for nylons typically?
Moisture affects the results
Why are there different conversion factors for ASTM vs ISO test specimen bars?
ASTM impact values are across their thickness only and ISO are area, but the test specimens are different sizes resulting in the different conversion factors
Which heat tests does adding glass to the material affect the greatest?
HDT
RTI and CUT will remain virtually the same
Why does a 20 melt ABS not flow the same as a 20 melt PC when injection molded?
MFR is a low shear test and does not account for the material's shear thinning, which will be different amounts for different materials
