True. Became known as "mill girls"...would give them some sort of "independence" (although not much free time since working long hours)...resulting in INDEPENDENT WOMEN..SO ALL THE WOMEN WHO ARE INDEPENDENT THROW YOUR HANDS UP AT ME....

Many new inventions during the Industrial Revolution relied on the use of: A) bio-diesel B) steam C) nuclear power D)French fry oil
B) steam (evaportated H20...which means needed a h20 source)

What is industrialization?
increase in use of machines ("machines replace hands"), increase in factories, mass production
100
What is urbanization?
moving to the cities (growth of cities, population)....factories were located in cities so people moved to cities (long hours so didn't want to travel from countryside).

What is the link to this Jeopardy review game?
(also posted on Ms. C's website)

MIDDLE CLASS and working class (poor, but WORKING poor) Bonus 50pts if said that later split into upper middle and lower middle classes
200
How did industrialization impact transportation?
Railroad greatly expanded and drastically increased all across the world, inventions such as steam engine (more efficient train) and airplane, cost of transportation went down

cloth...clothing, towels, etc.
200
Who operated the machines in the factories? (an effect of industrialization)
Men, WOMEN, and CHILDREN (as young as 6)
200

****DOUBLE JEOPARDY DEJA VU**** Many things increased and expanded during industrialization. What are at least 2 things that did NOT increase during industrialization?
Cost of producing goods, cost of shipping goods (cost of transportation), cost of communication
300
What is 1 major invention that greatly increased the manufacturing speed in the TEXTILE industry?
power loom, cotton gin, water frame, spinning jenny, spinning mule, flying shuttle
300
Describe work conditions in early factories.
Dark, dirty, dangerous (3 D's)... because relied on sunlight only to see, no safety equipment, no ventilation, no a/c, dangerous machines, long hours, etc.
300
Why did pollution increase in the early 1900's (20th century)?
increase in the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, gas, diesel, etc. ALSO the population increase (more people more pollution)
400
How did the upper class feel about the upper middle class AND what caused them to feel this way?
They resented them...they were jealous of the "power" and wealth that the new social class of people known as "upper middle class" had gained AND this is because industrialization helped the emergence of a "middle class".
400
Name at least 3 inventions that were either an effect of OR a contributing factor to industrialization
Steel mill, steam locomotive, steam ship, railroad, gas engine, diesel engine, airplane, electric dynamo, light bulb, nuclear power, flying shuttle, spinning jenny, power loom, cotton gin, water frame, spinning mule, radio, telephone, Model T (1st car) etc.
400
Why are nations around the world STILL trying to industrialize? (in other words, what are the benefits of industrialization?)
Economic AND social growth (more wealth, more employed), better standard of living (housing, diet, and clothing improved), new industries = more $ (taxes, trading, etc.)
400
An important effect of the Industrial Revolution is that the "standard of living" changed. Describe "standard of living" and how did it changed (increase/decrease)as a result of industrialization?
Increased as a result of industrialization. "Standard of living" is basically your "lifestyle". The quality of housing, food, clothing, etc. that one has...usually determined by amount of income.
400
****DOUBLE JEOPARDY DEJA VU**** Compare the advantages and disadvantages of industrialization effects on the daily lives of people and their environment. Explain at least 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages.
Adv. = standard of living increased, middle class emerged (more social classes, more opportunities), economies across the world boomed (more wealth) Dis. = pollution increased, unfair, unsafe, unhealthy work conditions (until unions developed anyway), child labor led to decrease in literacy, abuse/destruction of natural resources
500

Upper class = aristocrats and landowners (wealthy before IR); upper middle class = factory owners and merchants (wealthy now because of IR); lower middle class = skilled workers and factory supervisors (no longer part of "lower/working class" because of IR); Working class = factory workers (poor before, poor now, but working)
500
Describe mass production and the assembly line (be specific in explanation) and how these "inventions" impacted production (cost, effectiveness, output).
Mass production is when a massive amount of a product is produced...usually on an assembly line, which is when each person or machine does one part of the manufacturing (known as division of labor) such as (PBnJ sandwich production): one machine spreads PB on slice of bread, another spreads Jelly on other slice of bread, another smashes the two pieces together, and another wraps it in napkin (no plastic wrap back then)...AND it impacted production by making cost of production cheaper, faster and larger production of goods.
500
Where did industrialization first start...in other words, which nation was the "leader" in industrialization? AND why?
Great Britain AND because they had economic and political stability ("kings" of colonization and imperialism), large population of workers, access to rivers and sea ports (transportation, trade), and access to water power and coal to fuel the new machines
500
Describe the living conditions in urban areas (cities) during the Industrial Revolution.
Dark (no electricity), dirty (no garbage service, no sanitation codes), cramped (small living spaces, entire families in one bedroom), lacked police protection, epidemics spread (illnesses such as cholera)
500
As industrialization increased, so did ________________, _____________, ______________, ________________ and ___________________ (5 -tion words) Hint: think about 5 effects of industrialization...that all INCREASED)
