A mirror is a smooth-surfaced object made of glass or metal that reflects light and produces an optical image of an object. But which country is considered the birthplace of the mirror?

According to historical accounts, the birthplace of the mirror is Venice, Italy. During the Middle Ages, Venice was the only place where mirror production was highly developed, and the secret of mirror-making was strictly guarded and not shared with other countries. To keep the secret hidden, mirror-makers were relocated to the nearby island of Murano.

Anyone who revealed the secret of mirror-making was threatened with the death penalty. Mirror-makers were provided with excellent living conditions and were treated with the same respect as the country’s wealthy merchants, nobles, and aristocrats.
