What are the two gases used for OAW?

Oxygen & Acetylene

100

What color is the Oxygen tank? What color is the Acetylene tank?

Oxygen: Green

Acetylene: Red/Black/Brown

100

What does SMAW stand for?

Shielded Metal Arc Welding

100

What unit of electricity does SMAW use on the welding machine?

Amperage (Amps)

100

What does PPE stand for?

Personal Protective Equipment
200
What shade lens/goggles should you wear when OAW?

At least a shade 5

200

What is used to keep the OAW tanks in an upright position?

A chain that ties the tanks together
200

What shade lens should you wear when Stick Welding?

Shade #10

200

What are two ways that you can strike an Arc?

Tapping or Dragging

200
What are three types of protective clothing you should wear when welding?

Long sleeve shirt
Pants
Closed Toe Shoes
Welding Jacket (Leather)
Welding Gloves
Welding Cap

300

How much should you turn the Oxygen Tank Valve?

How much should you turn the Acetylene Tank Valve?

Oxygen: All the way

Acetylene: 1/2 turn

300

What should be used when lubricating regulator screw or checking or leaks in the OAW system?

Soap/water mixture to lubricate or check for bubbles (gas leaks)

300

What is the coating on the electrode rod called?

Flux Coating

300

What tool do you need to use to get the slag off the weld?

Chipping Hammer

300

Why should you never hold hot metal with your gloves? What can you use instead?

The metal is still too hot for the welding gloves and can burn you. You can pick up the metal with a pair of pliers or other similar tool instead.

400

What is the tool to use when repairing welding hoses?

Hose Clamps

400

Why should you always light a torch with a Flint Striker?

This will prevent serious burns since it creates distance from your hands and the flame. There is no fuel source when using this.

400

What happens if the electrode rod touches the metal while welding?

It gets stuck to the metal.

To get it unstuck, you must unclip the rod from the holder and then pull the rod off.

400

Name 4 different parts of the SMAW system

Welding Machine
Electrode Cable
Electrode Holder
Electrode Rod
Ground Clamp
Ground cable

400

How can you prevent others from getting burned by leaving hot metal in a workbench/booth?

Announce that the metal piece is still hot and for no one to touch it

Immediately cool metal in sink (OAW)

Mark it "Hot" or air cool it (SMAW)

500

Name 5 different parts that make up the OAW system

Oxygen Tank
Acetylene Tank
Regulators (2)
Tank Valves (2)
Torch Body
Welding Tip/Attachment
Hoses (2)

500

What are the steps for setting up the OAW Welding Machine?

1. Turn the oxygen and acetylene tank valves on
2. Adjust the psi using the tank regulators
3. Turn the acetylene valve on the torch body until you hear whistling sound
4. Light the torch with a flint striker
5. Adjust flame until you get a feathery flame with little to no carbon
6. Adjust flame to neutral by adding oxygen and turning the oxygen valve on the torch body.

500

What are the steps for setting up SMAW?

1. Ensure both the Electrode Cable and Grounding Cable Clamp are plugged in and hooked up properly to the table
2. Turn the welding machine on and adjust to proper settings
3. Attach the electrode rod to the electrode holder
4. Strike the arc and begin welding

500

How does SMAW protect the molten puddle?

The flux protects the weld and shielded gas and creates a layer of slag

500

What are five ways you can ensure your safety in the welding shop?

Answers will vary.
