Why does the Quran state that the People of the Cave remained in the cave for 309 years instead of 300 years?

The difference is explained by the use of two types of calendars: the solar calendar, which is based on the Sun, and the lunar calendar, which is based on the Moon.

  • 300 solar years are based on the Earth's orbit around the Sun.

  • 309 lunar years are based on the Moon's cycles.

A lunar year is approximately 11 days shorter than a solar year. Over 300 years, this difference adds up to roughly nine extra years.

This explains why Allah mentions 300 years plus nine in Surah Al-Kahf (18:25).
