The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things. [24:35]

This Chapter/سورة‎‎ is considered to be the summary of whole Qur'an by almost all notable classical and modern Islamic scholars including Imam Shafi, Ibn Kathir, Israr Ahmed and Farhat Hashmi.
What is Surah Al-Asr? Ibn Kathir, a traditional exegetic holds that this sura, as a warning to believers not to waste time or they we could be humiliated or even ruined. Imam Shafi, a jurist and traditional scholar of Islam, held-that if God had only revealed this surah it would have been sufficient for the guidance of all humankind. It summarized the very essence of the Qur'anic message. Thus, Imam Shafi’i asserts that if one followed its counsel, it was enough for humankind to achieve success in life. Sayyid Qutb, a modern exegete of the Qur'an, asserts that this surah outlines a complete system for human life based on an Islamic viewpoint. He says that it defines, in the clearest and most concise form, the basic concept of faith in the context of its comprehensive reality. He further says that he is gravely shocked to see the loss and ruin in which humanity finds itself. He is critical of Muslims and non-Muslims and particularly witnessing that humankind is turning away from the goodness that God has bestowed upon it. He is confident that the guidance of this surah is what made the early Muslim great as it can do for those that follow it in the long history of humanity. He says that once the early Arabs were aroused by such surahs, they quickly burst the bounds of Arabia and zealously worked toward the salvation of humanity. Al-Tabarani: Interestingly, when humankind finds itself at a loss; it can revive itself by returning to the formula provided by the third verse and the four principles/conditions, which are adhered to as a foundation. We saw how these four principles operated on both physical and spiritual levels. This is probably the reason why the companions of the Prophet did not want to become heedless of the foundational message of Islam. Consequently, they used to meet one another and only depart until one of them recited surat-Al-Asr to the other and they bid peace upon one another.

He is believed to have lived after Abraham, and Muslims believe that he was sent as a prophet to a community: the Midianites also known as the People of the Tree since they used to worship a large tree. To the people he proclaimed the faith of Islam and warned the people to end their fraudulent ways. When they did not repent, God destroyed the community.

These are the number of Makki and Madani Chapters/سور. (Revealed in Makkah & Madina)
What is 86 Makki & 28 Madani? The scholars and experts on the Quranic Sciences made mention of three primary criteria for the classifications of ‘Suwar’ (i.e the chapters of the Qur'an) into Makki or Madani. These are: 1. Time: If a Surah was revealed before the migration of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a) from Makkah to Madina (precisely before getting to Madinah), it is considered a Makki (i.e. A Meccan Surah) but if it was revealed after the Hijrah ( be it in Medina or any other places), it is considered a Madani (i.e. A Medina Surah) 2. Place : Any Surah that was revealed in Makkah and its premises ( be it before or after the Hijrah), it is considered a Makki, but any Surah that was revealed in Madina and its premises, it is considered a Madani. 3. Audiences : Any Surah that addresses the unbelievers (i.e. polytheists and idol worshipers) is considered a Makki while the Surah that addresses the believers, the hypocrites or the people of the Book is considered a Madani. Meanwhile, the popular and widely accepted view for this classifications among the scholars is the time of the Prophetic Hijrah. It was based on this that out of 114 ‘Suwar’ of the Qur'an, 86 are considered to be Makki while the remaining 28 are considered Madani. However, if place of revelation is used as the criterion for these classifications, there would remain some chapters which were neither revealed in Makkah nor Madina. Likewise, if the audiences of the Qur'an is used as criterion, then the status of so many chapters will remained undecided, because, we have ‘suwar’ (i.e. chapters) which addressed the unbelievers but it was revealed in Madina while we have ‘Suwar’ that addressed the believers but it was revealed in Makkah. In view of this, in my candid opinion, the best criterion for the classifications of ‘Suwar’ into Makki or Madani is the time of the Prophetic Hijrah. Thus, the Makki ‘Suwar’ are 86 while Madani ‘Suwar’ are 28. Allah knows BEST.
