Has the flag ever had more than 13 stripes?
Yes. When Vermont and Kentucky were added as States, the flag was expanded to include a star and stripe for each new state. As more states were added it was decided to stick with 13 stripes for the original 13 colonies and just add a star or we'd have had the only bed sheet sized flag.
