You read a paragraph that explains a new scientific concept. In the margin, you write, "This connects to what we learned about ecosystems because both involve interactions between organisms." This annotations demonstrates this skill.
What is making a connection?/activating prior knowledge?
A website written by an expert and supported with research is generally more trustworthy than an anonymous website because of this factor.
What is author credibility/authority?
A student claims that plants need sunlight to grow. They provide plant-growth measurements and explain that sunlight allows plants to carry out photosynthesis, which provides the energy needed for growth. The explanation connected the data to the claim is this part of CER.
What is reasoning?
A student copies a paragraph from a website, changes a few words, and does not give credit to the original author. This is an example of what academic problem.
What is plagiarism?
You encounter a claim in an article that seems questionable. Instead of automatically accepting it, you write a note asking what evidence the author provides to support the claim. This annotation demonstrates this type of thinking.
What is critical thinking/questioning the source?
Two websites make completely different claims about the same scientific topic. Before deciding which information to trust, you should examine factors such as the author's expertise, evidence, publication date, purpose, and this additional factor: whether the information is supported by other reliable sources.
