Why is it important to check all of the electrolytes each week and not just the one we might think is low?
Because many of the electrolytes have overlapping symptoms when too high or too low. Also many of them work in tandem with other electrolytes.
Example: If the sodium level is too high, the body gets rid of excess sodium in the urine, which takes calcium with it, depleting the calcium in the body as well.

How does refeeding syndrome affect phosphorus?
It can cause phosphorus to drop early on in treatment.
(This is because eating again causes a spike in gluose from the food, which, in turn causes a spike in insulin, which drives the glucose intracellularly for ATP production. This also causes phosphorus to enter the cell, since the P in ATP stands for phosphate. This is why we see a drop in phosphorus levels during refeeding until the body can start to compensate and restabilize levels)

False: As calcium has an inverse relationship to phosphorus, magnesium also has an inverse relationship to phosphorus.
The kidneys play an important role in magnesium reabsorption and excretion. Thus, as the kidneys reabsorb more magnesium, they also excrete more phosphorus, which also raises the levels of calcium. That is why it is important to monitor magnesium levels along with phosphorus and calcium levels, as they all impact each other.
