What is the establishment clause?
Part of the First Amendment that says the government cannot declare an official religion

What is the free exercise clause?
Part of the First Amendment that says the government cannot restrict religious belief and/or limit how people practice it

There knew that religious intolerance often led to conflicts and violations of people's rights. They thought it was a danger to the community.
