Yes or No: Running and loud talking is permitted in the library.

No. Other people use this space. We need to respect them as well as our classmates when we are in the library.

100

How do we behave during Open Exchange?

Come in quietly, pick a book, check out and go right back to class!

100

True or False: Book spines should always be facing out on a bookshelf.

True! Book spines provide us with a lot of information (title, call number, type of book - e.g., Biography).

100

What is a bookstick and when should I use it?

It's very important organizational tool. I should use it whenever I'm in the fiction or nonfiction stacks so that if I don't want a book I know EXACTLY where it goes.

200

True or False: Food and water bottles are allowed in the library.

False. Food, water, and books don't mix, plus the library is carpeted. Leave your snacks and drinks for the classroom.

200

I've found my book and signed it out. Now what should I do (name one)?

Sit and look at it quietly, explore the shelves some more, have a quiet conversation with other friends who are also done (in the main part of the library), or quietly enjoy a library activity (e.g., puzzle).

200

True or False: I can take books from displays.

True! Mrs. Harding puts books on display on purpose, and with the hope that you'll choose them. They are often related to particular themes or topics.

200

True or False: I should lend my library books to a friend.

FALSE! You are responsible for your library books. If your friend wants it and you are done, come to the library together and switch it with Mrs. Harding.

300

True or False: You can come to the library to get new books any time during the day.

False. Mrs. Harding teaches several classes during the day, and is busy during breaks. The only time to come down is during your exchange time or Open Exchange (3:05-3:25 daily).

300

I don't know what book to choose. What should I do? Give one idea.

Ask a friend, my teacher, or Mrs. Harding for recommendations. Scan the shelves for interesting books. Check out the displays for ideas.

300

I want to try something new. Where can I find recommended books?

The front shelving unit. Just take out the bookmark, give it to Mrs. Harding, and sign it out. YOU can add books to this display, too, if there is room!

300

When I first come in to the library, where do I sit?

At the tables. The ONLY exception is if there are no table seats left. Then you can sit at the side chairs.

400

How many books can students have out at one time?

You are always allowed 2 personal choice books. If you are in the Red Maple reading program or are asked to get a book for an assignment, those are extra books for you (on top of your 2 books).

400

Books are overdue in the system after 3 weeks. What should I do if I'm not done?

Renew it, but only to a maximum of 2 times. I should return it if I'm not that interested so other people can enjoy it.

400

I want a Red Maple book. How can I find them?

Go to the fiction section and look for the Red Maple sticker on the spine. These are always GREAT choices!

400

What do I do when I'm done with a book?

Return it to the library RIGHT AWAY. Returns always go in the library return bin (NOT on Mrs. Harding's desk). You can do this ANY time.

500

True or False: Now that I'm in the Intermediate Division, it's okay to check out any book in the library.

False! In grade 7 and 8 you can access mature reads/Red Maple BUT you should not be borrowing books for little kids, books that are too hard for you, or books that make you feel uncomfortable.

500

I've lost or damaged my book. Should I a) ignore it? b) buy a replacement c) pay for it?

B! If you pay for a book the money goes to the Board and doesn't help us anyway. If you cannot afford a replacement, have your family write a letter acknowledging the lost book. Just take responsibility.

500

What books are organized using numbers?

Nonfiction

500

I pulled out a book but changed my mind. I've also already removed my book stick. What should I do? Give one idea.

Give it to Mrs. Harding or put it on the beige cart to be reshelved.
