The mathematical process of combining two or more numbers (or quantities) to find their total value.
Addition
The mathematical operation of taking one quantity away from another to find the difference between them.
Subtraction
The mathematical operation that scales one quantity by another, equivalent to repeated addition of equal groups.
Multiplication
The mathematical operation of determining how many times a quantity is contained within another, or splitting a quantity into equal parts.
Division
A symbol (usually a letter like x, y, or z) used to represent an unknown value or a quantity that can change.
Variable
Any of the individual numbers being added together. ie: 4 + 5 = 9
Addend (both 4 and 5 are addends)
The initial quantity from which another number is to be subtracted. ie: 9 - 4 = 5
Minuend (the number 9 is the menuend)
A number or expression that is multiplied by another number to yield a product.
Factor
The number or total quantity that is being divided or split into equal parts.
Dividend (20/4=5, 20 is the dividend)
A mathematical sentence comparing two expressions using inequality symbols (<, >,≤, ≥, ≠)
Inequality
The total result obtained from adding numbers together.
Sum
The quantity being subtracted from the minuend. ie: 9 - 4 = 5
Subtrahend (4 is the subtrahend)
The factor by which another number is multiplied. ie: 6 X 3 = 18
Multiplier (3 is the multiplier)
The number by which the dividend is divided.
Divisor (ie: 20/4=5, 4 is the divisor)
A numerical factor multiplied by a variable (ie: 3 in 3x).
Coefficient
The symbol used between addends to denote the operation of addition.
Plus sign (+)
The result obtained from subtracting one number from another.
Difference
The result obtained from multiplying two or more factors together.
Product
The primary result or answer obtained from dividing one number by another.
Quotient
A mathematical phrase containing terms, numbers, and operators without an equals sign (ie: 2x + 5).
Expression
A mathematical statement asserting that two expressions are equal, containing an equals sign (=) (ie: a + b = c).
Equation
The symbol placed between numbers to denote the operation of subtraction or to represent a negative value.
Minus sign (-)
The product of a given number and any integer.
Multiple (ie: 12 is a multiple of 3 and 4)
The horizontal or slanting line separating the numerator (dividend) and denominator (divisor) to denote division. (e.g., $\frac{a}{b}$ or $a/b$).
Fraction bar (ie: a/b, 20/4)
A mathematical statement asserting that two expressions are equal, containing an equals sign (=) (ie: 2x + 5 = 11).
