An educated guess that attempts to explain an observation or answer a question
What is Hypothesis
What is proven

In order to evaluate information, a scientist approaches that info from a specific worldview. If the sci. Method is filled, all scientists analyze data, but different conclusions come from interpreting the data through the lens of what they believe about the world.
List examples of operational and historical science from the account:
You see a statue and wonder what it weighs and who made it.
What is weighs__________ (Operational or historical)
Who made it ___________ (Operational or historical)
Weighs- operational
Who made it - historical
Can scientific study be applied only to things we observe happening today?
No - historical science involves studying historical data
This tends to occur as a "last step" after analyzing the results
What is conclusion
An explanation of the natural world that has been thoroughly tested and is supported by a significant amount of evidence
What is scientific theory
This is why humility is important in performing scientific experimentation
Because you might be wrong, or make too big of judgement leaps
(Aliens on mars)
Making education assumptions about the past by examining evidence we can see today.
-Fossils
-Pangea
-Evolution
In when scientists analyze the same data differently from one another, what might be affecting their thinking?
their worldview
The hypothesis is usually tested in this step...
What is the experiement
A description of a natural phenomenon or principle that is supported by a significant amount of evidence and often includes mathematical terms
What is scientific law
This (in order) is the answer in terms of True or False for BOTH statements:
1. Science cannot prove anything
2. Science is not 100% settled
True, True
This is a good definition and example of operational science
Includes Things that can be measured by many people so that the data are repeatable and confirmable.
-Heigh, weight, speed
Op - uses experiments
Historical - uses relics and records
The leading step of the scientific method includes ____________ or a question
what is observation
This is the term for an example that contradicts a conclusion
What is counter example
This (in order) is the answer in terms of True or False for BOTH statements:
1. A scientific Law can never be overthrown
2. Science must conform to the scientific method
False, True
Ptolemy thought the earth was the center of the universe with everything circling around us. Even though he collected good data and had evidence, he was eventually proven wrong. What can you say about scientific conclusions?
Operational or historical?
They are never permenantly settled
Operational. He gathered and analyzed dataThese are the steps of the scientific method
Observation/Question
Research
Hypothesis
Experiment
Conclusion
After a conclusion is made and the hypothesis is incorrect, this is the next step
What is construct a new hypothesis
This is the blank in the sentence: "Summarizing the account of Lowell and his hypothesized Martian canals: Although the conclusions of science are not always ________, science is a very worthwhile endeavor."
What is right?
Settled
Although ancient people didn’t know about parasites, the bible taught their Israelites to refrain from eating pork. Of all the types of parasites that can grow in meat, the worst ones grow in pork - slowly eating all of your muscles until you die. Explain why this shouldn’t be a surprise.
ALSO- Historical or operational science?
Because even though people didn’t know it, God knew it.
(Historical perhaps? Could argue)
These are some of the items that are limitations to science:
Science cannot prove anything
Science is not 100% settled
Science must conform to the scientific method
