An aspect of an experiment that changes during the course of an experiment
What is an experimental variable?
The systematic study of the natural world through observation and experimentation in order to formulate general laws.
What is science?
In EXP 3.4, the surfactant molecule interacted with both the water molecules and the fat molecules in the whole milk.
What is true?
Experimenters use blind or double-blind studies to remove this thing that might affect the results of the study.
What is bias? (opinions or preconceived ideas)
This gives nformation about a graph so it can be better understood. One might also be found on a map.
What is a key? (legend)
A variable that stands alone and does not vary or change in the experiment (graphed on x-axis)
What is the independent variable (IV)?
Studies or experiments in which information about the test is kept from the participants to reduce bias
What is a blind study or experiment?
In EXP 3.1 the egg sank because it was less dense than the tap water.
What is false? (It was less dense than the salt water and more dense than the tap water.)
When doctors conduct a clinical trial to determine if a new medicine or vaccine will work, and neither they nor the participants know who is receiving the real medicine or the placebo, then they are conducting this kind of a study (experiment).
What is a double-blind study (experiment)?
These graphs can have single or double _________.
What are bar graphs?
A variable that depends on other factors in an experiment; it’s measured in some way (often on y-axis)
What is the dependent varible (DV)?
A preconceived notion
What is bias?
In EXP 3.1, the tap water was more dense than the egg so the egg floated.
What is false? The salt water was more dense than the egg which caused the egg to float.
These graphic tools show information about one topic using charts, graphs, quotes, timelines, etc. There are several on the walls of our classroom.
What are infographics?
All charts, tables, and graphs need these to tell about the data being represented.
What are titles? (main table, graph, or chart title, x-axis title/left column title, y-axis title/right column title)
The variable of part of an experiment to which all other variables will be compared
What is the control (of an experiment)?
Experiments or studies in which neither the experimenters nor the participants know the objects’ identities in the setup.
What is a double-blind experiment or study?
EXP 3.2 showed that candle flames need water in order to burn.
What is false? Candle flames need oxygen in order to burn.
A student likes to drink very warm hot chocolate and wants to figure out how long it takes his drink to cool to room temperature compared to putting the mug on a hot plate. Which experimental setup has fewer unwanted variables?
Using 2 mugs of hot chocolate, each heated to the same temperature. One is placed on a hot plate and the other on a counter, and each has a thermometer inside to measure the drop in temperature over time.
Using 1 mug of hot chocolate and testing it twice, heating it to the same temperature each time. The first time it is placed on the counter with a thermometer and the second time it is placed on a hot plate with the same thermometer.
What is #2? (The variables are reduced because the same mug is used, the same thermometer is used, and the room temperature needs to be the same both times.)
These graphs have more than one name and may show percentages.
What are pie chart, pie graph, or circle graphs?
The Pepsi Challenge, a type of taste test where testers are blind to the type of cola they are tasting, is one
What is a blind experiment or study?
An ineffective medicine that can have a real benefit for a patient. (Ex. sugar pill)
What is a placebo?
In EXP 3.3, when the candle went out the water was drawn into the glass due to the creation of a vacuum inside the glass.
What is true?
A chef wants to know if his new spaghetti sauce recipe is improved as compared to his old recipe. He invites a large group of people who love his old recipe to his restaurant for a tasting, dividing them into 2 groups. The first group is served spaghetti with the old sauce recipe and the second group gets spaghetti with the new sauce recipe. None of them know which recipe they are receiving (but the chef does!).
What is a blind experiment or study? (Neither group knows which sauce they are tasting. The chef knows one group ate the old sauce and another group ate the new sauce. The old sauce group is the control group in this blind taste test.)
These graphs can show dramatic changes in the data, and they can show trends over time.
What are line graphs?
