When we can't see any of the Moon's reflected light, what phase is it in?
New Moon
What force controls our ocean tides?
Gravity
What three objects are needed for an eclipse to occur?
Sun, Earth and Moon
Is it Earth's Rotation or Revolution that contributes to us having Seasons?
Revolution around the Sun.
Where does theory say that our Moon came from?
Earth
What do we call moon phases that appear to be getting smaller?
Wanning
How many high tides and how many low tides do most beaches experience in 24 hours?
What is the order of the Earth, Moon & Sun during a LUNAR ECLIPSE?
Sun --- Earth --- Moon
Earth is tilted on it's axis at __________ degrees.
23.5 degrees
What is included in our solar system?
The sun and the planets/objects orbiting our sun.
What do we call moon phases that appear greater than 50% lit?
Gibbous
What types of ocean tides do we experience during Full and New Moon phases?
Spring Tides
What is the order of the Earth, Sun and Moon for a SOLAR ECLIPSE
Sun --- Moon --- Earth
If the Northern Hemisphere is experiencing Summer, what season is the Southern Hemisphere experiencing?
Winter
What is the name of our Galaxy?
What do we call the phases when the moon appears to be getting bigger?
Waxing
What types of ocean tides do we experience during first and third (last) quarter moon phases?
Neap Tides
Compare/Contrast where you have to be to see a Solar Eclipse and a Lunar Eclipse
Solar Eclipse: within the "path of totality" on the daylight side
Lunar Eclipse: Anyone on the nightime side of the Earth
Identify one part of the Earth that does NOT experience seasons.
Equator OR Poles (north or south)
Put the following in order from smallest to largest: Solar System, Moon, Galaxy, Earth, Universe
moon, earth, solar system, galaxy, universe
Explain the two reasons why we have moon phases
1. The moon is lit by the sun.
2. The moon revolves around the Earth
Explain the difference between spring and neap tides in regards to the high and low tides experienced that day.
Spring Tides - large difference between high and low tides
Neap Tides - very little difference between high and low tides
Why do we not see lunar and solar eclipses each month?
The moon's orbit is tilted 5 degrees to the plane of Earth. Most of the time the Moon orbits either above or below Earth.
Explain the two reasons why we have Seasons on Earth?
1. Earth is tilted on it's axis meaning that different parts of Earth can be pointed towards the Sun.
2. Earth revolves around the Sun. Sometimes the N. Hemisphere is pointed towards the sun, and sometimes the S. Hemisphere is pointed towards the sun.
What is the difference between rotation and revolution in terms of movement and time on Earth
Rotation - Earth spins on it's axis - 24 hours = 1 day
Revolution - Earth orbits around the Sun - 365 days = 1 year
