Break in bone often from trauma
What is a Fracture?
Crackling/grating sounds, nodes, joint pain and stiffness most frequent in the mornings
What is Osteoarthritis?
Calcium, Vitamin D, Bisphosphonates (fosamax, alendronate), weight-bearing exercise
What is Osteoporosis Management?
Monitor for infection spread, gentle handling extremity, high-calorie & protein diet, educate on recurrence signs
What is Osteomyelitis Interventions?
Pain, bleeding and urinary output
What is Post-Op Monitoring?
Patient with decreased bone density and fracture risk
Bone pain especially with weight bearing, anemia, and spontaneous fractures
What is Bone Cancer?
What is Osteomyelitis Management?
Avoid prolonged positions, encourage movement, teach safe use of assistive devices
What is Osteoarthritis Interventions?
Infection & Hypovolemic Shock
What is Post-Op Complications?
Patient with bone pain and possible metastasis
What is Bone Cancer?
Fever, severe persistent bone pain that is localized
What is Osteomyelitis?
Biopsy for diagnosis, surgery (possible amputation), radiation and chemotherapy
What is Bone Cancer Management?
Fall prevention: handrails, shower mats, side rails, teach pt to split calcium doses for better absorption
What is Osteoporosis Interventions?
Bed rest for 24 hours, gradual weight-bearing
What is Post-Op Mobility?
Degenerative joint disease with pain that connects to what joints have been used the most
What is Osteoarthritis?
Kyphosis, loss of height, low back pain and compression fractures common in the vertebrae
What is Osterporosis?
Acetaminophen, corticosteroids, aerobic exercise, heat therapy, weight reduction, assistive devices
What is Osteoarthritis Management?
Pain management, prevent deformities with prone positioning 2x/day, apply elastic wraps to shape limb for prosthesis
What is Amputation Interventions?
Cross legs, bend forward (90 degrees), internally rotate hips
What is Post-Op's DO NOT's?
Bone infection with fever and localized pain
What is Osteomyelitis?
Bone breaks through the skin putting the patient at higher risk for infection
Immobilize, elevate, cold pack, pain control and maintain aligement
What is Immediate Fracture Management?
Assess: circulation, temp and skin condition, skin care, no hot dryer, do not insert objects
What is Cast Interventions?
Raised toilet seat, pillow between legs, abduction
What is Post-Op's DO's?
